Interior Renovation of the Clubhouse – Club Tennis Barcino, Barcelona
The renovation project of the Social Chalet at Club Tennis Barcino, an historic institution founded in 1928, with its current building inaugurated in 1954, undertakes the comprehensive transformation of an emblematic building located in the Sant Gervasi district. The intervention stems from the desire to modernize its image, optimize its functionality, and reinforce its identity as a meeting place between sport and social life, updating the whole while preserving its memory and original character.
The building is conceived as a place where the sporting “being” and the social “being” coexist. Under this premise, the project seeks to enhance what already exists, clarify its organization, and provide it with a contemporary and timeless language.
The previous condition revealed a poorly structured circulation, multiple changes in interior levels, and a weak relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. The main strategy consists of reorganizing uses and establishing a clear reading of the whole. On the main floor, three major areas are defined: the lobby, lounge-bar, and restaurant with games room, achieved through the unification of levels and the replacement of steps with accessible ramps, eliminating architectural barriers and improving spatial continuity. This operation not only resolves accessibility but also brings coherence, order, and calm to the interior sequence, enhancing the members’ experience.
The lounge, bar, and restaurant are no longer understood as independent elements but are configured as a single continuous, flexible, and versatile space, capable of accommodating both everyday use and events or celebrations. The system allows these areas to function together or be subdivided according to the club’s needs, increasing adaptability. The bar is expanded, and connections with the exterior are strengthened through the opening and enlargement of façade openings, transforming windows into full-height doors that increase natural light and reinforce the visual relationship with the terraces and tennis courts. The removal of suspended ceilings allows the recovery of the original wooden truss structure, gaining height, spatial generosity, and architectural character. The fireplace is preserved as a central and symbolic element, consolidating its role as a focal point within the social space.
The main entrance is relocated to provide greater visibility and representativeness, creating a landscaped outdoor area that dignifies arrival and enhances the entrance experience. A canopy with a metal structure and wooden slats is introduced to improve climatic comfort and reinforce the architectural identity of the ensemble, maintaining transparency between reception and exterior while fostering a more direct relationship with the surroundings.
