Can Cavalleria
Can Cavalleria is a residential complex located in the historic centre of Palma. The building, previously made up of several constructions articulated around a common courtyard, has been used for various purposes throughout its history. At the time of the intervention, it was in an advanced state of abandonment and in a high degree of deterioration.
The project consisted of a comprehensive refurbishment, carefully respecting the traces of the medieval building and the existing architectural elements of value. The result is a series of unique dwellings that dialogue with the heritage context, providing new layers of use without altering their historical identity.
During the consolidation and restoration work, several arches hidden in the load-bearing walls were uncovered, as well as a well more than 20 metres deep in the inner courtyard, now preserved and visible as part of the building's architectural route.
One of the main technical challenges was the incorporation of an underground car park with a capacity for seven vehicles, which was successfully resolved despite the complexities of access to the urban fabric of the old town. The resulting dwellings have private outdoor spaces, with the attic dwelling being particularly relevant, which conserves the original wooden trusses of the roof and extends towards a large terrace with 360° panoramic views over the city of Palma.
